How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Venue for you

By Gold Coast Wedding Coordinator - Jess Larsen

Deciding on a wedding venue can feel exciting (and overwhelming).

When couples begin planning their wedding, one of the very first decisions they usually make is choosing a venue.

Between scrolling Pinterest, comparing packages, and falling in love with beautiful photos online, it's easy to choose a venue based on how it looks rather than how it feels.

And as a Wedding Coordinator on the Gold Coast Australia, I've seen time and time again that the best wedding venues aren't necessarily the most expensive, most popular, or most impressive. They're the ones that align with the experience you want to create.

Start with your Wedding Vision

Before you start booking venue tours or comparing pricing, take a moment to think about how you want your wedding day to feel.

Do you want it to feel relaxed and grounded?

Elegant and formal?

Intimate and connected?

Fun and celebratory?

Your venue sets the tone for the entire experience, so it makes sense to choose a space that naturally supports that feeling.

For example, if your dream wedding feels relaxed, outdoorsy and connected to nature, then a formal ballroom in the city may not be the right fit, no matter how beautiful it is.

The more aligned your venue is with your vision, the easier every other decision becomes.

Always Visit Before You Book

One of the biggest pieces of advice I can give is this: Visit your venue in person before signing a contract.

Photos can tell part of the story, but they can never fully capture the atmosphere of a place.

When my husband and I were planning our own wedding, we originally booked a beautiful property that looked perfect online. It ticked all the boxes on paper.

But when we visited in person, something didn't feel right.

The property was stunning, but I couldn't imagine myself walking down the aisle there. I didn't feel calm. I didn't feel grounded. And because those feelings were incredibly important to us, I knew I needed to trust my instincts.

That decision led us to finding the venue where we eventually got married, and the moment we drove down the driveway, I knew it was the one.

Trust how a venue makes you feel.

Think Beyond The Photos

When you're touring venues, try to picture the entire experience.

Imagine:

  • Arriving on the morning of your wedding

  • Where will you get ready

  • Walking to your ceremony

  • Spending time with your guests

  • The flow of your day

  • Celebrating on the dance floor

  • The Wet Weather Backup Plan

Does the space support the experience you want to have?

The right venue won't just look beautiful in photographs. It will help you feel the way you want to feel.

The Best Venue Isn't Always the Most Expensive

It’s easy to assume that spending more means getting a better experience.

But the truth is that the best venue is simply the one that aligns with your priorities.

For some couples, that's a luxury venue with everything included.

For others, it's a private property surrounded by nature.

For others, it's a family farm filled with meaning and memories.

Final Thoughts

When choosing a wedding venue, don't just ask whether it looks beautiful.

Ask yourself:

"Does this space support the experience we want to create?"

Because long after the flowers are gone and the decorations are packed away, what you'll remember most is how you felt.

And that's exactly what your venue should help create.
